Does Cashmere wool suffer from pilling (little bobbles) ?

The creation of a Cashmere wool pullover is a long-suffering task which needs to be undertaken with the utmost care. When manufacturing garments one must decide between softness and the possibility of pilling. Specifically, the first of these two options are to, make a loose thread for the smoothest Cashmere. The problem with this method is that it encourages the release of tiny hairs (due to the pressure placed on the garment) whilst it is being worn. Thereby causing pilling.

The alternative involves using a through thread to prevent hair from floating, by keeping it tied down. However, this method reduces the smooth texture created by the previous technique. To illustrate this difference, consider the texture of a thread from a ball of wool compared to that of a rope.

The issue of pilling is not isolated to the manufacturing of Cashmere; it occurs regardless of the type of wool that is used (sheep wool for example). The material will always suffer from pilling due to the inevitable friction which will be placed on the garment, which will cause the loss of hairs that get stuck together, making soft bobbles.

With this in mind, we have made the following decision regarding this dilemma. As we wholeheartedly believe that Cashmere wool has to be smooth, our policy is to always render this quality to our products. Consequently the probability of pilling is increased. Despite this fact if clients take care of their products, then bobbles should only appear temporarily. As for the softness, this is a timeless quality of our products that will not be lost.

What to do to reduce the eventual appearance of bobbles (The following advice can be applied to any kind of wool: sheep, lamb or Cashmere wool) :
  • Keep your garment unworn at least 2 out of every 3 days.
  • Don't wear it for 2 consecutive days.
  • Try to reduce any friction placed on the garment (On the edge of a desk, table or a seatbelt for example). Obviously, this advice can only be applied in a limited manner as we are all physically different. The shape of our bodies can ultimately be the determining factor in the long term preservation of wool garments.
  • For a Cashmere wool pullover: don't hesitate to soak it in soapy water. You should remember that Cashmere wool requires water. The she-goat is used to living in uncomfortable conditions, most of the time, in rainy regions. The hair is used to being soaked. When it is washed, it first loses its shape, then it shrinks slightly and then when drying it returns to its original state. This is the process that should be used to restore your garment and to ensure that forming bobbles disappear.
How to remove possible bobbles (if pilling begins to occur):

You should use a special comb for woollen bobbles if you want to tear them off as delicately as possible. They are quite easy to take off because they gather into downy and delicate bobbles. This occurrence differs from all other wools whose bobbles form much stronger. With these garments rough brushing makes the cloth look like a beard. This is the case for angora wool for example. Conversely, your Cashmere wool top will look the same after many treatments. As has already been mentioned, the soft Cashmere wool bobbles are easy to take off, and the downy hair gives a natural lightness to your cloth.

In conclusion, don't forget :
  • No existing piece is totally resistant to pilling, whatever the type of wool (sheep or she-goat). Accordingly bobbles will be created. Yet the quality of the material will depend on the extent of pilling.
  • Mahogany's Cashmere wool items are extremely smooth and soft. Whether you are a lover of Cashmere wool or a neophyte, we guarantee you will be pleasantly surprised by how our garments feel.
  • Thus, we shall say that our cashmere wool may make a few soft bobbles. If you find a few bobbles, remember you should take them off by yourself and your cloth will remain like new. This is a small price to pay for complete satisfaction with the continuous smooth quality of your Cashmere wool item.
